Nintendo 64 Test Cartridge

These test cartridges were sent to official Nintendo service centers to be used to help diagnose problems with your N64 unit. These are very rare and you will not see another one for a VERY long time. The service centers were supposed to keep cartridges like this VERY confidential, but as the n64 was being replaced with the Gamecube, some of the employees took them home when they weren't supposed to, or occasionally collectors contacted the service centers and bought their old parts and supplies.

Bung's classic Doctor. Uses CD's and was available with 128&256Mbit. This was basicly the first mass produced N64 backup unit available. The unit connects to the expansion port made for the 64DD.

Another Bung device. This one is dependent on a PC to send/receive files. Was first released with 256mbit RAM but later with 512mbit. MANY licenced companies switched over to using this product over the oh-so-pricey official kit.

The CD64 was released in the spring of 1998 at a very competitive price. Many people complained about problems and poor quality while others seemed to have no problems at all. The unit is still available from online retailers but I assume the actual production has been stopped.

Famicom-WideBoy

The NES/Famicom WideBoy uses the Famicom just for power. The WideBoy hardware has to write to RAM with different gfx halfway down the screen as the Famicom does not have enough BG tiles in VRAM to display the entire gameboy screen.

The interesting thing about this WideBoy is that it uses the Famicom just for power, basically. The custom hardware feeds an 8k RAM chip with a CHR version of the GameBoy's screen. If the BIOS has crashed, or the reset button is held down, the GB just happily keeps on running. I've played with the WB's hardware by putting a custom program into the Famicom's memory (displaying wavy scrolling of the GB screen, pixel-doubling, etc...) and it would seem that the custom hardware in the WideBoy has a timer to switch the graphics being fed to the 8k RAM chip after displaying a certain number of CHR tiles. You see, the Famicom doesn't have enough BG tiles in VRAM to display an entire 160x144 Gameboy screen, so the WideBoy hardware has to write to the same RAM with different graphics halfway down the screen.

AGB TS2 Dev Board

Here's the whole grail of AGB developers. The sexiest unit of them all! This bulky board was the only thing available to developers before the final design of the GBA was ready. ALL but a few of these were sent back to NOJ and destroyed :(

Now here we have something very interesting =) This unit has made me drool ever since I first saw it way back in 2000. Before the actual GBA design was finished, developers were given this development board to be able to test their code. As I don't really have one of these units I can't give you all the details but supposedly, around 4 versions of the board was released (names TS1-TS4 or something). The title of this page says TS2 development unit as I think that was the most common one. It is possible that the TS1 came without the LCD among other things. TS4 should be the finished product (AGB) but honestly I can't remember much about this since a few years has passed by now, but I'll do my best to try and find out.

If you take a look at the pictures for Unit #1 you can see a few other interesting items. As you may have suspected, the item that looks like a large n64 cartridge is in fact the Wideboy-AGB unit. The Wideboy-AGB, when used with an N64 unit can output the image from the GBA to a TV screen. Several versions of the Wideboy-AGB have been released. The newer ones are standalone units that you can simply plug in a regular GBA game into. No need for cables and big boards etc. But enough about the WideBoy-AGB! What else is on the picture? Well, there also seems to be a IS-AGB-EMULATOR, which should have been used to send the binary's to the development board to be tested. I am not sure however as Ive never used this unit myself and I can't be arsed to contact any of my mates who have. Since many of you who are reading this have worked/are working with IntSys tools, please mail me everything you know about them so this page can be updated. Anywho, what you don't see on the picture is that the IS-AGB-EMULATOR is connected to a PC (woah!).

Let's move on to Unit #2. As you can see the pictures of this unit are of a more artistic character. There is no WideBoy-AGB connected to this unit but you get a good view of the IS-CGB-EMULATOR. CGB? Yes, this is the IS-CGB-EMULATOR. Not sure why so let's skip that part for now :P This unit has a SNES controller connected to it. This was of course used to make it easier to test the games so you didn't have to use the small buttons on the board.

I think that's about it for now. One of the most beautiful things out there... If you want more information on the layout of the board, IGN (follow link below) has some pictures with basic information from 2000. Unfortunately I think most of these sexy units were sent back to NOA/NOJ in 2001.

VUE-Debugger

It's the official Virtual Boy debugger made by IntSys. One of the more rare units out there.

Information from PlanetVB:
The VUE-Debugger is the virtual boy development system, which was made and sold by Intelligent System to licensed software companies. It consists of the debugger itself, which has the same name, as well as a special virtual boy (Early Units included a prototype VB), a controller, software and drivers. To use the Debugger, a PC interface board had to be purchased as well. Optional accessoiries were additional 4 MByte Emulation Ram, the VUE C Compiler (VUCC), a PAL ouput board to connect the debugger to a TV, the Video Boy (a stand-alone Unit to view VB games on a PAL TV) and the Flash Gang Writer, a unit to write up to 8 VB Flash Carts at the same time. Games are being programmed on the PC using the software that came with the debugger on several disks, then they're transferred onto the debugger via the SCSI card. The game can then be playtested in 3D with the contained Virtual Boy unit or in 2D using the optional Video output card.

Sharp C1

Nintendo and Sharp had a close relationship back in the days of 8-bit gaming. In the world of Famicom, Sharp is best known for creating the Twin Famicom, a single console that had both cart and disk ports. A little less know, but still highly sought after item, is the Sharp C1, a combination TV and Famicom.

The C1 came with a Famicom built into its base, and unlike the Famicom and Twin Famicom, it had a controller you could plug into the base. Just like its NES counterpart, 19SC111, the C1 wasn't a very popular item. But unlike the NES version, the C1 sells for a lot more money today. An unboxed C1 with the original controller can sell for as much as $600.

Sharp packaged with the C1 the only licensed multi-cart made for the Famicom: the Donkey Kong 2 in 1. The two games were Donkey Kong Jr. and Donkey Kong Jr. Math. For whatever reason, the 2 in 1 cartridge isn't as rare as the C1 itself, selling for about $30.
